Facilities: Lodging includes three weeks at the Taskesti field research station of the Turkish General Directorate of Disaster Affairs (Earthquake Research Department), with nine 2-3 person rooms, each with bathroom and shower, a large conference room, kitchen, and dining hall. An experienced cook will provide meals. The research facility at Taskesti has been occupied by international scientists for more than twenty years. The locals are very much accustomed to tourists. Nearby Lake Abant and Kartalkaya Resort (15 miles to Taskesti) is a premium winter sports center and summer getaway for many Turks and Europeans. One week will be spent at the Cayirhan coal mine facilities (with swimming pool), and one week at the guest facilities of the Hirfanli Hydroelectric Dam in Kaman, Kirsehir. Course Content : The course includes preparation of engineering stratigraphic columns, geologic maps, engineering assessment and design of dams and bridges, stability of rock and soil slopes, flood plain analysis, watershed studies, surface and groundwater contamination, mineral economics, and other geologic and engineering topics as they are available. Each project requires analysis and preparation of formal engineering reports. Successive projects involve greater complexity with inclusion of results from site characterization and geologic hazards assessments at each study area. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND COSTS
